Bombay’s History

Bombay is always standing on the threshold of creating history!

300 BC — Part of the Great Ashoka’s Empire.

1343 — Part of the Gujarat sultanate.

1431 – Haji Ali Dargah built one of the First Mosques of India.

1670 — First printing press in India was imported to Bombay by Parsi businessman Bhimji Parikh.

1675 — The temple of Mumba Devi constructed Goddess of Kolis community of fisherman.

1735 — Start of India’s First ship building industry (Wadia docks, Duncan docks).

1750 — Asia’s First dry dock built by Lovji Wadia in Bombay.

1777 — Rustom Kersaspjee published the First news paper from Bombay.

1822 — Publication of India’s oldest news paper Bombay Samachar started by Fardunjee Marzban.

1853 — First train in India ran  Bombay to Thane.

1854 — Establishment of First Cotton Mill.

1870 — Formation of Bombay Port Trust one of the First major corporation in India.

1872 — Foundation of First municipal corporation the Bombay Municipal Corporation.

1885 — Foundation of Indian National Congress.

1915 —  Mahatam Gandhi returns to India from South Africa at Bombay to start his fight for Indian   freedom struggle.

1926 — India’s First motorised bus ran between Afghan Church and Crawford Market.

1932 — J. R. D. Tata Business tycoon flies the first flight in India from Karachi to Bombay.

1934 — UDCT established. First institute dedicated to research in Chemical Engineering in India.

1942 — Quit India Movement declaration passed at Gowalia Tank Maidan.
