According to the Report of the Standing Committee of the National Monitoring Committee for Minorities Education, released in April 2013, and based on the Population Census figures of 2001, Muslims constitute around 13.5% of the total population, with a literacy rate of about 59%.
Christians make up about 2.3% of the population but their literacy rate is higher at 80.3%.
The Sikhs are 2% of the population and their literacy rate is 69.4. The Buddhists and Zoroastrians are less than one percent of the total population but their literacy rates are 72.7% and 97.9% respectively.
Is it a consolation to the Indian Muslims that they are better off than their counterparts in Pakistan.
