In December 2014, Asif Ali Zardari was acquitted of two corruption charges by an Islamabad Accountability Court in the ARY Gold and Ursus Tractor corruption references.
Accountability court judge Bashir Asif is still hearing the SGS and Cotecna references.
After the Supreme Court declared the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) illegal in 2009, NAB revived a number of corruption references, including the five in which Zardari was also involved. These references were: Cotecna, Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), ARY Gold, Ursus tractors and polo ground cases.
Since being President, Zardari enjoyed immunity at that time, he did not face trial during the previous PPP government. The references were reopened in October 2013. Benazir Bhutto was also a party to some of these references but could not be made one after the reopening due to her death.
However, all the co-accused persons in the five corruption references were acquitted during the tenure of the PPP government.
Asif Zardari filed applications for his acquittal without facing trial after he made appearance in the accountability court in early 2014.
The Lahore High Court also received various complaints filed by the citizens based on press reports according to which in at least three major corruption cases against Mr Zardari – Cotecna, SGS, and ARY Gold – the authors while writing judgments used similar words, expressions and even paragraphs.
Subsequently, the Lahore High Court administrative committee/ inspection team initiated an inquiry in 2013 about complaints of ‘favorable’ decisions passed by the accountability courts of Rawalpindi in the corruption references against Zardari.

Dear am surprised as to why u hate so much to a leader of one of Pakistan’s major political party. He may not be innocent but certainly not bad than many other leaders who rules this PAK country for 60 years. You forget that he lived more than 12 years of his youth in jail wihtout getting a single sentence. who else in pakistani (punjabi) elite has ever passed that much period in jail. On Sept 27, 2008, Interior Advisor Mr Rehman Malik in Islamabad has directed the cyber wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to trace out the originators of fictitious e-mails and SMS, sent to the people. Fictitious e-mails and sms, transmitted to the people are aimed at launching vilification campaign for the character assassination of the politicians and senior leaders.
It may mentioned here that people are receiving fake emails and sms as a part of sinister move against the politicians which is meant to mislead them and impair the credibility and struggle of the political parties for resurgence of democratic norms in the country.
The directive given by the Interior Advisor to the investigation agency will help initiate immediate action against the culprits, indulged in the smear campaign against the political leadership of the country.
On Sept 26, 2008, in Islamabad, the presidential spokesman has taken strong exception to a malicious campaign initiated by some anti-democratic elements to tarnish the image of President Zardari.
In this regard, the spokesman referred to some mysterious emails that were sent to different journalists, television channels and newspapers in which it had been claimed that the President misspelled a few words when writing his comments in the visitors’ book during his visit to Mazar-e-Quaid on September 11.
The spokesman made it clear that the President did not commit any such error while writing his views in the visitors’ book and the message sent by the ‘hidden hands’ was totally fake and fabricated. This can also be verified from a national daily’s report, according to a message received from New York here on Friday.
The spokesman deplored the fact that in their sinister design to defame President Asif Ali Zardari, the anti-democracy elements even tinkered with the spelling of God, which showed that they could stoop to any level to denigrate the President.
The spokesman lamented the fact that the propaganda to lower the President’s image started at a time when he was undertaking a very crucial visit to the US to discuss issues related to Pakistan’s sovereignty, the war against terrorism and support to democracy in the country.
In this regard, the spokesman also pointed to the misrepresentation of President’s meeting with an important figure in the US by a section of the media.
The spokesman said the campaign to undermine President’s visit to US was all the more deplorable because it was aimed at hurting Pakistan’s broader interests.
The spokesman added the propaganda, which in fact started after the nomination of Zardari as President, was clearly meant to create hurdles in Pakistan’s march towards unadulterated civilian rule.
The other aim of the elements averse to the strengthening of democracy in the country was to put spokes in the efforts of the President to address the country’s central problems like poverty and terrorism.
Subjecting President Zardari, who is symbol of federation, to venomous character assassination at such critical juncture when the country is at war against terrorists and is facing a grave economic situation is not only willful but also reflective of an unpatriotic mindset.
The people should take notice of such elements who are bent upon derailing the process of consolidation of democracy and obstructing efforts to improve the economy and root out terrorism in the country.
The national media, too, the spokesman stated, must show greater responsibility and expose the elements who through concoctions and fabrications were trying to distort the image of President Zardari.
In view of pressures on Pakistan and the situation in the tribal areas, the need was to exhibit a higher level of maturity, the spokesman stressed.
The spokesman reiterated President Zardari’s resolve to lead Pakistan to a prosperous future by overcoming all hurdles and challenges. Smear campaigns cannot deter him, he added.

1.Asif Ali Zardari
Unfortuantely, Asif Zardari is currently the Preseident of Pakistan. He is the co-chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party. Since his party i.e PPP has come into power, Pakistan has lost a huge amount more than Rs 8.5 trillion ($94 billion) in corruption, tax evasion, bad governance during the last four years. He is called “Mr 10 Percent” for his corruption that he did in over two decades. He had also been arrested in on corruption charges, extortion and kidnapping in 90’s. Systematic corruption is prevalent from top to bottom in the government of Asif Ali Zardai.
2.Yusuf Raza Gilani
This man is student of Asif Ali Zardari. Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yusuf Raza left no stone unturned to accumulate wealth for his sons Musa and Abdul Qadir Gilani ( they are also involved in a scandal) . He used to wear 15 lac worth of suits and coats in his incompetent premiership and proudly acknowledged that these coats and suits have been gifted to him by his friends. Supreme Court of Pakistan disqualified Yusuf Raza Gilani on charges of contempt. He denied writing a letter to Swiss authorites to reopen graft cases against Asif Zardari.
3.Nawaz Sharif
Head of Pakistan Muslim League (N) party, Nawaz Sharif is former premier of Pakistan. He is alleged to have been involved in money laundering and corruption in his tenure. He took billions of rupees loans from National and commercials banks of Pakistan and never repaid the loans.
4.Shahbaz Sharif
Shahbaz Sharif is presently chief minister of Punjab province. He is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif. Sharif was involved in failed “Sasti Roti” and yellow cabs schemes for which billion of rupees were wasted and no relief was passed on to poor people of Punjab. Both the brothers never pay the taxes while they are the owner of biggest mills and factories of Punjab.
5.Pervaiz Musharraf
Pervaiz Musharraf is the former President of Pakistan. Though he took many steps to bring stability to Pakistan’s economy but his presidency was marred with many corruption scandals . One of them related to PSMC (Pakistan Steel Mill) He and his government were involved in the privatization of Pakistan Steel Mill Corporation from which they extorted money for their own interest .
